Position Title: Program Officer
Reports to: Marine Program Manager
Location: Tunis
Closure date: Monday June 24th , 12p.m UTC+1 (Tunis time)

 

1. PURPOSE 

 
The Fisheries Program Officer will play a pivotal role in advancing WWF North Africa's conservation objectives related to sustainable fisheries management. This role will involve working closely with local communities, governments, and international partners to promote sustainable fishing practices, protect marine ecosystems, and contribute to the long-term sustainability of fish stocks.

2. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 
The objective of the fisheries program officer is to contribute to the implementation of WWF NA activities in the framework of the SSF2 Project in Tunisia and the objectives of the conservation strategy 2023-2027, as detailed below:

  •  Lead and manage fisheries-related projects and initiatives in North Africa.

  •  Ensure all project activities are implemented on time and within budget.

  • Monitor and evaluate project progress, ensuring alignment with conservation goals and objectives.

  • Conduct and oversee scientific research on fisheries and marine ecosystems.

  • Analyse data and provide insights to inform sustainable fisheries management practices.

  • Collaborate with research institutions, universities, and other stakeholders for data collection and analysis.

  • Advocate for sustainable fisheries policies at local, national, and regional levels.

  • Engage with policymakers, providing evidence-based recommendations to influence fisheries management regulations.

  •  Participate in relevant fisheries management forums and networks.

  •  Work with local fishing communities to promote sustainable fishing practices.

  •  Develop and deliver training and capacity-building programs for local stakeholders.

  •  Foster community-based conservation initiatives and empower local leaders.

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including government agencies, NGOs, and private sector partners.

  •  Represent WWF NA in regional and international fisheries forums and networks.

  •  Seek opportunities for collaboration and partnership to further conservation goals.

  • Identify funding opportunities and develop proposals to secure financial support for fisheries projects.

  •  Manage budgets and ensure financial accountability for fisheries program activities.

  •  Prepare regular reports on project progress and impact for internal and external stakeholders.

  • Develop communication materials to raise awareness about fisheries conservation issues.

  • Contribute to WWF NA’s publications, website, and social media platforms.

 
3. DURATION
The period of carrying out this work is fixed for 12 months. Renewability is possible based on budget availability.
 
4. QUALIFICATIONS
 
This position is open to Tunisian experts. The fisheries program officer is expected to have the following profile, skills and expertise:
At least 5 years of experience in fisheries management, marine conservation, or a related field.
Proven track record in project management and implementation.
Experience working with local communities and government agencies.
Strong knowledge of fisheries management practices and marine conservation principles.
Excellent research, analytical, and data interpretation skills.
Strong advocacy, negotiation, and communication skills.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Proficiency in English, French and Arabic.
Willingness to travel within the region and internationally.
Commitment to WWF’s mission and values. 

6. WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
Internal. 
Reports and interacts regularly with the WWF NA Marine program manager. 
External. 
Interact with the external consultants and the relevant partners both at international (UNEP/MAP, IUCN Med and SPA/RAC) and national levels (Ministry of environment in Libya, CSOs co-managing MPAs) according to the project objectives.
