National Forest Fire Awareness Campaign in Tunisia: Mobilizing Communities to Protect Natural Heritage
As part of the national effort to prevent forest fires, WWF North Africa, in partnership with the General Directorate of Forests, organized a series of field awareness activities across Tunisia in June and July 2025. The campaign aimed to raise public awareness about the risks and causes of forest fires, strengthen local early-warning networks, and promote a culture of prevention as the first line of defense for protecting the country’s natural resources.
The campaign reached multiple regions, including Dar Fatma – Ain Draham, Beja, Sijouan – Tamera, and Mornag, engaging citizens, local authorities, civil society representatives, scouts, and members of the public. At key points along highways and in local forest centers, participants were invited to reflect on the simple yet critical actions that can prevent devastating fires — under the campaign slogan: “A small spark can cause a great disaster.”
Interactive workshops and on-site awareness sessions provided participants with practical knowledge on identifying fire risks, understanding their causes, and reporting incidents effectively. These activities also highlighted the role of local communities and civil society in reinforcing early-warning systems, ensuring that forest fire prevention is a shared responsibility.
Through these field initiatives, the campaign emphasized that prevention starts with awareness. By fostering collective responsibility and equipping citizens with concrete tools to act responsibly, WWF North Africa and its partners aim to protect Tunisia’s forests, biodiversity, and the communities that depend on these vital ecosystems.
This campaign represents a crucial step toward building a culture of prevention, reminding everyone that even small, individual actions can have a significant impact in safeguarding natural heritage for current and future generations.
